The Rejuvenated Hopewell Valley Golf Club in New Jersey

One of the greatest joys of living in New Jersey, is the opportunity to experience its beautiful spring weather. After a very mild winter, 2024 Spring arrived in gusto and gave me the opportunity to start golfing. I joined the Mercer County golf league and now every Monday I get to enjoy the great golf outdoors.

For the first month (May) we golfed at Princeton Country Club, which is an 'OK' golf course. It is very close to the Delaware water canal and so when ever it rains, it often floods and is impossible to golf. But in the month of June, we started to golf at Hopewell Valley Golf Club, a real gem situated in the heart of Hopewell township.

Hopewell Valley Golf Club operated as a private club for many decades, but after the original owners passed away, the course fell into disrepair. There were no buyers because of the slow down in the interest in golf post COVID 19, so the course and the country club went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy. In 2020, Mercer county purchased the course for ~$2.5M and since then has sunk another $2-3M in refurbishing it. Today, in my opinion, it is the best golf course in Mercer county.

The property is situated on 186 acres and boasts a PGA course designed by Thomas Hinton.

From talking to the golf pros at the course, I understand that Mercer County operates four courses and generates a healthy profit, which allows them to not only provide recreational services to the county residents, but also gives them the opportunity to expand the green open spaces in the county.

It is always heartening to see the tax dollars being applied to good uses and to preserve the lifestyle we have come to enjoy so much.
