Immigrant, Montana by Amitava Kumar

Came across this lovely book by Prof. Amitava Kumar of Vassar College. The book transported me back to my own college days when I had just arrived to Akron, OH, from India. I was, as the protagonist in this novel, Kailash, as awed by every thing around me, the clean roads, the spaces, the music, the freedom and above all, the the American women 😃.

These days we hear mostly about the harrowing experience of immigrants from South America, Middle East,South Asia etc who have to under take untold hardships to reach the shores of the United States. This book is a humorous take on a different immigrant experience - that of a male student who arrives into the university setting and is blown away by the opportunities in front of them, intellectual and social. A light and entertaining read, foreign students and those who come across them in the University, will immediately identify with the central character and the plot lines.

Four out of Five stars.
