2013 Automobile of the Year - Tesla Model S

Automobile magazine has come out with their 2013 car of the year award, and the winner is the electric car from Elon Musk, Tesla Model S.  Reading the article I am tempted to put down the $5000 deposit myself, but alas, the waiting list is long and Tesla is only able to manufacture 250 or so cars.  Undoubtedly, this is going to become the new status symbol for the tech industry baby millionaires!

This car, from all that I read, is the epitome of innovation...

Innovation in pharmaceutical compliance Monitoring

#innovation #biotechonology #pharmaceuticals #compliance
Here is an example of a technology company straddling the frontiers of digital technology and biology. Measurement of compliance to medicines have thus-far been admittedly a low key effort, involving bringing your bottle of pills to the doctor during your next visit and the doc counts the pills. Doing this electronically, and in real time is such a great idea.

And the possibilities are endless! I can imagine a microchip controlling...

What does it take to solve big problems

#innovation #problemsolving #science #technology #policy
An excellent article on how solving big problems takes more than technology or money. It often requires more than just an ambitious goal - it requires the political support and appropriate resourcing. Author argues that many of the modern innovations such as the email, Facebook etc are smaller, innovations that haven't really had transformative impact on human lives. I wonder though it that is truly the case. For example, if creation...

Even God couldn't help Newsweek!

Good journalism sells fine - just ask the Economist weekly. Newsweek on the other hand, has always been a skin-deep publication. So, despite the effort to pander to the growing demographic of religious zealots in the US, Newsweek lost the battle to keep its print publication. Even God couldn't help the editors! Funny!

Chinese Phishing Scam

Today I received a legitimate looking email from a Mark Yang of CN information center.  The email looked authentic and it seemed that the business was doing very legitimate activity of researching the domain name of our business Jaya Teas before registering similar domain names to a different company.

(Letter to the President or Brand Owner, thanks)

Dear President,

We are CN Network Information Center, which is a trademark agency in China. Here we have a very important issue to confirm with you. We formally received an application on Aug 20, 2012. One company which self-styled "Macima Investment Ltd" were applying to register "jayateas" as internet trademark keyword and following domain names:

 jayateas.asia
 jayateas.cn
 jayateas.hk
 jayateas.in

After our initial checking, we found the name is conflict with your company's name or trademark, so we need to send this email to you and confirm with your company whether this company is your distributor or business partner in China? If you authorized this, we will finish the registration at once. If you did not authorize, please let us know within 7 workdays, so that we will handle this issue better. Out of the time limit we will unconditionally finish the registration for "Macima Investment Ltd".

Waiting for your reply ASAP today.

Best Regards,

Please consider the environment before you print this e-mail.

At first, I thought, why would anyone be interested in registering the domain name of Jaya Teas?  It's not a big company, its not a big brand and especially since some of the common associated domain names (eg. .org, or .us) haven't even been registered.

Then it occurred to me that this might be a scam.  So, a quick search in the name of CN Information center revealed that indeed this is a scam.

Chinese Domain Scam

In reading the comment section it became quite clear that the MO of this scam is to encourage you to register additional domain names in the guise of protecting your brand equity and some people did fall for it loosing hundreds of dollars.  It is sad that this should happen, but in today's day and age of quick google searches, there is really no need to fall for this kind of scam.  If you ever get a mail of this kind, or any other phishing scam, do a quick search to see if there are others who have received this kind of email.

Economic Growth in Latin Markets

This quote from an analytical piece on Reuters website... read more here
Which economy grew faster over the last seven years? A) President Hugo Chavez's Venezuela, famous for its forced nationalizations and "21st century socialism," or B) Chile, long renowned as a capitalist paradise for investors. It might surprise some outsiders to learn that the answer is actually A. In recent years, commodities prices have dictated growth in Latin America more than any other factor, meaning that countries could trample on businesses but still grow briskly as long as they exported plenty of raw materials such as oil and iron ore to China and elsewhere.
Latin America is on a tear, and within it, economies that are not dependent on commodities, Chile, Peru and Colombia, seem to be driving growth.  While business climate is certainly improving, certain sectors like Pharmaceuticals are facing trouble with each of these economies embarking on controlling the health care costs by implementing price controls and access hurdles.
